“Just as the good life is something beyond the pleasant life, the meaningful life is beyond the good life”

is a quote from what many psychologists see as the father of positive psychology Martin Seligman.

I was reminded of it today when a friend spoke about how there is such an absence of positive thinking in the world.

And if I`m brutally honest at times I too can be one of those people too. After all, my recent speaking engagement started off about all the negatives in the world and although I had a way to bring what I was speaking about back into context, I`m sure the producer of the summit was wondering why I was so pessimistic to start with!

But the truth is it's okay to be negative now and then.

Because our early brains are wired for this wariness of action as they try to protect us from making errors that could lead us to unknown doom and gloom.

Simply put, we are put on planet earth to survive the ride.

And at times it can be a scary one so we need to have signposts, reassurance, and support to guide us along our growth path.

Most of us, most of the time do what is the safest thing that comes to mind and this is usually the basic option that feeds into our survival instinct. Yet that’s not being positive. And being positive will eventually get you where you want to go in life.

Let’s look at it another way.

Many people fear things because they are unknown. And much of that comes from the future. Yet when we age we begin to realize that much of what life is routine.

And that’s only another way of describing a predictable future.

That’s why many older people get regrets. They come to an age where they look back and they know their energy is spent and but can then view their life with twenty-twenty vision and see the opportunities they should have taken.

And then they realize as their future was guaranteed for a long time they could have done it better.

Without positive actions, all humans will prolong procrastination or become anxious in some way or another.

Why?

Because this safety alarm rings and we get stuck in neutral. Yet as the years pass that gear shifts to reverse but at that stage, we’ve run out of gas.

So don’t be old and reflect on the positive thinking and action you should have done in your youth. Instead, know that you can make swift changes once you weigh things up that are in your control.

With that in mind, here are ten areas you can look at straight away, and if you choose to make a change to any of them you`ll look back with great joy for what you did:

  1. If you are in a job and you know you are destined for a better position then go home and research what are the best areas of work that you can easily get into without too much hassle.
  2. If you are in a relationship that isn’t fully giving you what you need then communicate this with your partner. Because if they don’t know what you want how can they please you?
  3. If you long for faraway hills then travel there and you`ll then understand if they are greener than the ones you usually walk through closer to home.
  4. If something is popping into your head that you are curious about then do it as it’s there for a reason and it most likely is self-created by your thoughts sometime in the past.

5. If you find someone interesting try to befriend them by telling them that you admire what they say or stand for. They`ll be thankful for your compliment and if they are open enough to converse with you, then you`ll learn a lot about yourself as a result.

6. If you are clueless about how to move to the next stage of your life instead look at how others that you admire have moved there first. Then from there, you`ll begin to see your path to forge.

7. Know that your action will always speak louder than your words because when you age you may be sick of hearing the voice that has doubted you for so long.

8. Understand that you only have so much time and that opportunities may only come around once only,

9. Whatever it is, if it’s going to happen for you then it’s up to you because blaming others won’t make it happen for you,

10. Believe it or not, there are people in your life that look up to you and expect you to take a positive step so know you owe it to them for their support along the way.
