There’s talk and then there’s action.

Today I experienced both.

At this stage you may have noticed I`ve written quite a bit in my lifetime. And with much of it, I`m dishing out tips and tricks, advice, and knowledge to readers. Within it all, I’ve provided a lot of information, tactics, and stories to all who wish to have them. I do this because, essentially, I love to help others.

But in helping others you can sometimes forget yourself.

You can become overly dependent on telling people how to do this and that but then if you don’t do it yourself what’s the point in being the lecturer to other peoples’ lives?

There is none.

So in essence it’s important for me to practice what I preach.

And this afternoon I had to do just that. Because after all the free information and writing I`ve put out there it became priceless to me as I had to tap into my library to prepare for what I was about to do.

That involved me speaking to an audience of over 50, 000 people from all around the world.

Not only that but I had to be ready to answer any questions that they may have after it.

So now I want to share with you my feelings about doing this for the first time and how I prepared for it all too:

1. Visualization makes for actualization

If you can see it then you not only can, but you will do it.

Because if you train the visual cortex of your brain to see something then you`ll be calm when it happens in reality. Your brain will then guide you to automatically follow the procedure of putting into action whatever you intend to do.

I did this from the moment I learned I was going to speak in front of all of those people and it allowed me to focus straight away on doing what needed to be done to achieve it.

2. Practice certainly does make perfect

It’s an old saying but it’s so true. Because when you speak you are performing. And I knew as I specialized in helping people perform at their best that I needed to put it out there that I could practice what I preach and perform well too.

How many times should you practice your speech?

As many times as you feel to get it right and you will be able to recite it back by heart!

3. Timing is vital when you speak as there are usually people who are organized to speak both before you and immediately after you as well

So with a big organized event of over 50,000 listeners, you need to have your timing perfected. Because you are not the show, you are only a small part of the overall organization of what the series of speakers bring to the audience.

And you need to be able to be adaptable with each part of what you say as well.

For me, I was given a period of how long the speech would be weeks beforehand but right before I was about to speak live I was asked to prolong my talk for an extra 5 minutes longer.

So I had to adapt what I was saying whilst also responding to the audience in real-time.

4. Accept If you make mistakes when you speak

Because once your mouth opens you may make a small error here and there. So don’t be afraid to slow down and clarify what you’re saying. If you do you`ll realize that that mistake will be a moment when the audience is very aware of what you’ve just uttered and you can grasp it as a time to pop in a joke or make fun of yourself to momentarily entertain people.

5. Be open to smiling and having fun with it all

This will decrease any stress you may feel throughout the speech and members of the audience like to see speakers being natural and positive in their demeanor too.

6. Giving knowledge is important but linking it to your life and your clients are just as appealing to the viewer

That’s why ideally you need a mixture of theory, practice, and personalization. Because when you are speaking in front of a large number of people they are wondering what you are like in your personal life. So if you share bits and pieces from it they`ll begin to feel as if they can relate more to what you`re saying in general.

7. The night before your speech accept that you`ve completed it all successfully it will help you to sleep better

That way you`ll be controlling your emotions and saving energy as well. Because when the time of the speech comes you`ll need to be able to know you`re brain is both energized and in sync, with the words, it has practiced many times before.

8. Eat the proper foods on the morning of the speech

Otherwise, any feelings of being nervous may interact with your body improperly as it struggles to digest all that it has eaten. For me, I ate something that I knew would digest easily an hour before I spoke. That gave me adequate energy and allowed me to be poised when I was up next in line to perform.

9. Make sure to rehearse on the morning of your speech and treat that as if it is the live speech itself

Yet if you mess up you`ll be so frustrated with yourself but that’s okay as you won’t have long to look forward to the time of your live speech so it will help you focus on what you need to do correctly when that time comes around.

10. Have recovery techniques that you can use because it’s likely you will make a mistake at some time or another

As these will settle any nerves you may have right before you speak. And it offers some assortment to your speech which will help keep the attention of your audience when you get into the flow of what you want to get across.
