3 Life Lessons That Will Take You A Long Way

Life has a funny way of teaching us a lesson so it’s important to be open to learning them when they are provided so you can have a better life now and in the future

I`ve been growing all my life.

And I hold myself accountable for getting better every year I`m on earth.

Ever since I`ve been a child I`ve tried to learn as I go along. And when something went wrong when I was a child, of course, it was a tough lesson to take but I`d make sure I`d question myself.

When I went for a walk alone I`d say to myself:

“What have you learned now that you’re 12 years old?”

and then I`d have to think deeply about things and go back over the previous 12 months so I could see the things I did wrong. Then I could figure out what would be a better thing to do if the same situation happened in the future.

Now maybe you think I was very hard on myself as a youngster but I wanted to learn so that when I became an adult I`d be able to be a better person.

Here’s three of the most important things in life and around the ages I learned them:

  1. When I was very young I was taught religious studies in school and that gave me a great moral anchor in life.

When I was seven years old I had to do our first holy communion and at the time I learned how it was important to have a good relationship with God. In class, we were taught to talk to God through prayer. Of course, as the years passed and I noticed not only the good things that have happened in religion but the bad things too I learned why it’s still important to understand the fundamental core of goodness that comes from choosing a god in life.

Because since then I’ve been that young lots of horrible things have happened in the religious orders.

And although my stomach churns when I think back on all the wrongdoing I’ve learned about I also know it’s important to accept that the core ethos of what I learned hasn’t changed.

Other people have broken big rules and abused others, but that’s not me.

Sure I’ve sinned along the way, but not in the same capacity as some of those that were in authority in religions and who abused their positions of responsibility. So I`ve grabbed the basics of what I’ve learned since then and tried to continue growing within it all.

And since then I`ve tried to improve my relationships not only with God but with everyone I`ve known throughout my life because I believe it’s important to keep those you`ve met along the way close to you. Because you`ll never know when you`ll need them in your future.

2. When I was growing up I learned the value of hard work and discipline as I watched those around me get up early to work hard and try to make things happen.

Growing up I was the youngest and when I was attending post-primary school and holiday time was coming my natural reaction was I wanted to relax and take it easy before I had to return to school again after a few weeks.

But it was during that time I noticed how if you`re working for yourself you must work very hard every day.

You don’t have weekends off.

You don’t have holidays when most people who are employed have time off.

My beautiful goddaughter is now a beautiful adult!

Yet although all of that may sound unattractive I also learned there were great advantages of working for yourself too. Because you dictate how much you`ll be rewarded.

If you are ambitious and you work hard you`ll force yourself to learn more. But if you lack that ambition you may find the work will stress you too much and it won’t be all worth it in the end.

3. By the time I was an adult I figured out how honesty is so important because people will remember you if you lie.

And if you don’t tell the truth people build up a bad opinion about you. And they’ll talk about you as being the person who can’t be trusted. So when everyone around you thinks and talks like that you`ll lessen the opportunities you`ll get because people won’t want to be around you if you continually lie.

On the other side of things though if you show honesty you`ll become trusted by people.

And they will talk about you in a positive sense. From there you`ll meet people for the first time who`ll have already heard about you and will welcome you with open arms. Because they`ll have known you`re a good person who they can be with.

Now don’t get me wrong you can’t be considered a pushover but it’s important to be respected in your field.

Because when you are doors open up for you. And those doors allow you to walk through and see what’s on the other side for you to gain the advantage that you get from living in truth.

And although those three things were great life lessons I`ve learned more important to all of them is that I know I need to continue to be open to learning and wanting to improve in the future.

Because it’s never too late to learn and important to be open to it if you want to have a good life now and in the years to come.
