Learning from the greatest in sport will make you a better sportsperson and it will also make you the greatest at something else in your life as well

The best quotes from Sports can be the best words of life.

Because if there is success in sport there can be success in life too.

After all, success is success.

And if you can listen to the sporting greats and learn how they’ve succeeded according to their experiences then you can put it into your life straight away and learn how you too can become successful.

For example, the great Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo once said:

“I’ve never tried to hide the fact that it is my intention to become the best.”

And many millions of football supporters around the world would agree that he was the best of his time. But many others would say that although he tried to be the best he fell short of Argentine Lionel Messi. As Messi had a different style to Ronaldo and in many ways had more team success than him lots of people would judge him as being better.

But there are also as many people who disliked Ronaldo and not because of his football ability. Instead, they were not drawn to him because he was upfront in his ambition to try to make himself the best.

Yet for him, that’s what worked.

He needed to put it out there and tell people his ambitions to command respect in the sport he loved.

And it’s been proven if you put things out there and talk about how you will do things in the future then you’re immediately accountable for those words. For someone like Ronaldo every time he said he was the best or wanted to score a certain amount of goals the media jumped on that and made a headline.

If he failed to live up to his bold claims he got social media abuse.

So he knew his words carried weight and that he needed to back them up.

But not everyone is a top-class footballer. And they don’t have the media on their back all of the time. Still, by telling a friend that you will be the best at something you’re raising the bar for your performance for some aspect of your life and it gives you a positive pressure to deliver on that promise.

And a measure of how much you’re improving can come in how you notice other sporting greats then achieve the highest level in their sport and how they then communicate that self-belief and self-assurance back to the media again.

In doing so that’s a showing of confidence in what you’ve attained and it’s an invite for millions of people to prove your words as being incorrect too. So you need to have backed your words up or be capable of doing so straight away once you say it.

This was the case with Kobe Bryant when he once said:

“ These young guys are playingcheckers. I`m out there playing chess!”

And if anyone has tried to play checkers and then play chess after it they’ll know that it’s in a different class of thinking. And that’s what Bryant had. He was in a very different and higher class of ability than most players.

But to get to that level in sport or any other aspect of life you must understand what your ability is in the first place.

If you feel you have good natural leadership potential then go and work on that strength. Venture towards careers that respect and reward good leaders. Learn how to maximize your ability and hone the skills of leadership.

But if cooking is your jam then go learn how to be the best chief there is.

The point is, work on your strengths and use those to be your flagship towards success in life.

And that’s not to say you’ll succeed all of the time.

Because you won’t.

Even Ronaldo and Bryant did not win everything they set out to win. Sure they claimed loads of individual honors but at times they lost those honors the next year to their opponents. And not every record they set will stand the test of time.

But, more often than not in their career, they reached the highest point and this proves their claim to be talked about amongst the best in their sport.

And they would never have succeeded had they not tried in the first place.

That’s a point that former Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky pointed out when he once said:

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

So if you don’t try you defiantly won’t succeed.

And all of us have something to give to this world. Everyone has something that most others don’t have. Perhaps you’ve just not discovered it yet, but it’s there.

When you figure out what your strength is why not pay real attention to what the greats have done before you?

Believe in your ability.

And tell others about how great you are. Then work at it until you become known for being the best at that one thing. Because no one else will do it in the same great way that you will and you owe it to the world to show them how things can be done better too.
