There are four sides to every square.

And there are four corners to that square too.

These are some of the easiest things to teach when Math is being spoken about in a classroom.

I should know after all I spent enough years in the classroom teaching the fundamentals to children and younger people. And for the most part, it was a fun time. Yet don’t get me wrong some of the students didn’t take to Math as it wasn’t the stuff of their dreams.

But, at least, they all tried.

I couldn’t blame them if I`m honest. Because when I was a child in school I was the same way. Although I liked the fundamentals of it all and numbers and shapes were fun once it got more complex I never saw the relationship with life or how it was all going to be beneficial once school finished.

As I got that bit older I was even more that it was better to keep things simple.

That’s when I attended an all-boys school. There I can recall when some of the lads challenged the teachers about how they never felt it was important to know the more advanced theories of the subject. And it would make the teachers feel uncomfortable to answer because in reality, the lads weren’t believing their explanations for how we all needed to know the higher level of Math.

So later on when I taught that age group myself and was landed in an all-boys school for a while I was prepared.

I knew I couldn’t fake it or make a story about how advanced Math was needed for most jobs or college courses so I took the opposite approach to my teachers. Instead, I told them they didn’t have to learn the more advanced stuff but if they did then people would think they were smarter.

And that’s why they pay accountants and engineers more money than most other jobs.

That explanation landed pretty well for the most part. The lads appreciated my honesty and it seemed to give them a choice of whether they wanted to study at the higher level of the subject or not.

Why am I telling you all of this?

Well because in my time learning and teaching Math I still feel that understanding the basics is by far the most important for the vast majority of peoples’ lives. Because that’s what pays their bills and helps them get through life with the greatest amount of ease.

So like a square that has four sides and corners here are 4 psychological facts that will shape your working salary now and in the future:

1. Salaries are based on time spent as much as the value given in your job.

Most people clock in and clock out from work as it’s based on the equal but minimum amount of time that people must spend to legally fall into a certain tax bracket. This is a way for a government to measure the majority of people’s income. And some employees notice this very early on in their working life and so do the bare minimum amount of work until home time.

But that bothers others in work that has more pride, ingenuity, and drive to do that bit more.

Yet you don’t get rewarded for that in a regular job.

2. Employers don’t want you to perform better than management.

Because if you do then you are giving them a difficult decision to make as leaders of the company. As they know if only one worker does more than their bosses then it means they have to either make a change at the top or promote and create another title of responsibility for the worker who breaks the boundaries of what’s expected of them.

3. By living for true happiness you save money as the best things in life are free.

Now I know it sounds corny but it is true.

Because, you can’t put a price on knowing what makes you happy, getting out in nature, spending time with good friends, and doing what brings you joy.

And all of these things can be done for free.

4. Working until the traditional retirement age is the best way to de-motivate you.

Because the world is growing as the population on planet earth has trebled in the past 100 years alone. And when you think of the fullness of time this is by far the most alarming statistic that you’ll have to be aware of in the next decades of your career.

This shows that the current model of pay for employees in the world of work is unsustainable.

And already in the past few years, we can see how many people in western countries are being requested to work longer into their lives and retire later on instead. Yet governments have said that the reason there is an improvement in the health of older people comes down to an increase in average life expectancy and so that has dictated an increase in the normal retirement age.

But for some reason, they ignore a global obesity epidemic, our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, and the ever-rising mental health issues. So it’s difficult to presume how those that are working right now will be healthy enough to work longer into the decades to come.

Then again, maybe this depends on what these governments will define as what work will be in the future?

Although they are the facts, you can choose another way.

You just have to start thinking of the 4 sides of the square and the 4 corners it has too and build it a little more, look at it from another angle and then construct a couple of ideas around it and you’ll see that square as a box.

Then maybe when you see that box you can think outside of it and leave employment to create a different income for the life you’ve always dreamt of?
