Directing Your Conscious Brain Gives You Control
You may often feel your life is spiraling out of control but you have the ability to get it back on the right road so long as you take control of your thoughts
“Do it Yourself!”
That’s how you can control your conscious mind.
And that’s what I was told when I first needed to learn how to drive a car.
I was around 15 years of age soon to be 16 and although my parents had a car they didn’t want me to drive it. I couldn’t blame them because I have a license. And I wouldn’t have until at least 17 years of age because that was the minimum age range back then in my country.
But it didn’t stop me from wanting to drive.
Because at that stage I know that if I wanted to have any independence I’d have to make my way in the world. And a car was going to one way of getting there. So learning to drive on the road was going to be my ticket to greater freedom.
When I think back to that time now a quarter of a century ago I recall how I felt restricted and although I expected help to learn how to drive on the road I didn’t receive it.
Instead, I thought myself.
Not that I’m giving out about my parents. I couldn’t. They were brilliant parents.
But they were reluctant to teach me. Rather they wanted me to figure it out myself. Now that may seem a bit harsh but it wasn’t as bad as it first sounds.
Because I was able to drive tractors and other forms of machinery and was doing that for years beforehand.
And they knew many of the machines I had driven were more complex to drive and more difficult to maneuver than a car so looking back I take it as a compliment now rather than an insult that they were not willing to help me out.
Many tractors had stick gears that were stiff and awkward so a car was not going to be as troublesome.
And that’s the thing about reflecting about things sometimes they are not always as they seem in the present moment.
So that’s why we need to observe our thoughts.
The great yogis and Buddhas felt that observing your thoughts would lead you into a greater sense of being. An acceptance of a situation for being as it is rather than personalizing it and getting all emotional about it.
That’s what they got from being in a meditative state.
We can all be in that state too. A relaxed place for our brains to assess information properly.
They call it the Alpha state.
During the alpha brain wave state, you are relaxed and able to reflect on things. Here there are 9 to 14 cycles per second in your brain. The person is 100% aware of all the things happening in their vicinity. It’s a more relaxed state than the beta brain state.
The beta brain wave state is when you are aware enough to think logically and listen. You`re able to analyze things and process information that you receive. When shopping, driving or going to school your brain is in the 14 to 40 cycles per second and this is called the beta state.
Then there is theta state.
At 5 to 8 cycles per second theta is slower than alpha. That’s when memories can be recalled. When you`re trying to solve problems and know you have the answer but eventually it pops into your brain that’s when you know you`ve entered into the theta brain wave state. As it’s slower than alpha, you can experience deep meditation and practice of prayer in this state too.
Delta is another state and this is when you are in a sleeping phase of your brain wave. Here brain waves range from 1.5 to 4 cycles per second. This is where you can have dreams that you can sometimes recall once you wake.
Lastly, there are gamma brain waves.
These have the highest frequency. When you are very focused and have high levels of intelligence quotient (IQ) and better concentration then your brain tends to produce more gamma brain waves. If your brain is producing lower levels of this form of brain wave it could be because you have lower concentration or an attention span. You may even have or develop learning problems too.
Gamma brain waves are the fastest of all the five brain waves as they range from 30 to 80 Hertz per second.
When I remember back to when I learned how to drive the car the hardest part was that I was too young to get insured on the road and I hadn’t a car to practice driving. So instead I used to hop into my parents’ car when they weren’t looking and sit and move the gears up and down from first to fifth gear and back to the lowest gear again.
By the time I got out on the road, my brain had learned the map of where each gear was and I didn’t have to look down to check out whether I was moving my hand up or down, instead I could concentrate on the road.
And if we learn to use our brain waves in the same way we can master it before things get too stressful when we move.
Because now all these years later I know that a car is not the most valuable possession to get me to a greater place of independence but my brain is.
And how I move from each of those brain states needs to be as smooth as how I learned to change the gears so my thoughts flow can glide me along to where my destiny lies.
And in journeying into your brain’s unconscious you too can discover where your true road map to life lies so that you can consciously take control of it and drive it to where you want it to go.
