How Awareness Of People With Bad Intensions Makes You Smarter
Although it is great to trust other people it's important to be aware that there are potential thieves around us all of the time so we need to guard our property and not give them chances to take advantage of our naive ways
Sometimes smart people do dumb things.
I`m not saying I`m the smartest person in every room but I sure I’d be considered the dumbest in many rooms if everyone knew how I repeatedly did a few very dumb things.
Many think a person is smart simply because they have degrees, doctorates, and a Ph.D.
And if you`re one of them then perhaps you`ll think I`m a smart person. But if you read on you`ll probably think the opposite. Because I`m going to tell you about how I did such a stupid thing not once, not twice, but three times before I learned a vital life lesson.
Actually, you may not even think I’m dumb when you read this but instead, you`ll probably be convinced I`m insane.
As Albert Einstein once said:
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.”
And I have to admit I repeated the same thing a few times and I did expect a better result each time. But of course, I was wrong. And I got punished for my stupidity and hit where most people hate getting hit the most- in the pocket.
It all started when I was 19 years of age.
I had moved away from home to attend college. It was my first year living away from home and I was eager to get out and about in the real world and find my feet. Independence beckoned and I`d be living with a few new people in a different town.
I was excited and as I thought at the time I was ready to be my own man in life.
But I didn’t have a car as I was still awaiting a driving test to get my full adult license.
So instead I bought a bicycle and kept it locked up behind where I stayed in the college. It was okay there for a long time and I only used it if I needed to go beyond the college and into the town which was a few miles away.
One day after college I decided to go for a cycle and see what the local town had to offer.
As I was alone I grabbed the bike and set off and didn’t intend on getting off it throughout the trip. Before long I was enjoying being in control and moving faster than I would on my two legs. It was great to have that sense of independence and speed on the road.
I visited the town and checked out all the areas I wasn’t too familiar with.
When I did I was satisfied it was time to head back to my place to get my dinner cooked as my new responsibilities of living away from my family had presented me with another need to feed myself every day as well.
As I headed home I decided to stop at the pub for a moment just to see who was there so I`d know if it was worth the visit after dinner.
I left my bike by the entrance and stuck my head inside the door for no longer than a minute or two. I did a quick walk around and was happy I wasn’t missing any fun from the college gang as the place was still quiet at that time of the evening.
But when I arrived back on the street my bike was gone.
I looked far and wide for it but couldn’t find it. Worse again there was no one around to have witnessed its disappearance. And as technology was in its infancy back then there was no CCTV to be looked back on either.
And when I arrived home that weekend and told my parents what had happened the first thing they asked me was:
“Did you lock the bike when you left it outside the pub?”
And when my answer was that I hadn’t I was told I was dumb and it was my own fault for getting it stolen. Thankfully though they pitied me and they bought me another bike instead.
The next bike was a second-hand one and not nearly as good as the first one. I couldn’t blame my parents because they knew as I didn’t lock the first bike why should they pay more money for a new one?
And they were right.
Roll on the next week and I was thanking my lucky stars that my independence to hit the road and check the locality out was not taken away from me. As I enjoyed the first cycle so much the previous week that I decided to repeat it again. this time I momentary got off to use the ATM cash machine and left my bike out of sight for a few moments while I got my money from the hole in the wall
And guess what happened?
When I turned around my replacement bike had been stolen again.
I couldn’t believe it.
Not again.
Although I’d left my bike alone for less than 20 seconds its was taken from the same area for the second time in a week.
Needless to say, I decided not to tell my parents this time. In fact, I didn’t tell anyone. But, I learned that you don’t leave your property lying around in public whether it’s unlocked or unattended.
For the next twenty years or so I never repeated the same mistake. I`d learned my lesson as tough and all as it was.
But would you believe it all those years later I`d another bike stolen?
It’s true.
And this time I`d locked my bike in what was presumably a much safer spot than the first two times. Yet it didn’t matter a thief took it anyways.
So, what have I learned from it all?
No matter what you do or where you go there are people who have the wrong intentions hovering around you all of the time. There are people that’ll take things from you and don’t care about the consequences.
To survive in this life and get by you must be smart, be aware, and never take anything for granted.
