How One Thought Can Dictate Your Life

Your thinking can lift you up or drag you down so it's up to you to make sure you`re aware what thought is dictating your future

Thinking is almost as natural as breathing.

It’s the on-stage performance as a result of all the work behind the curtains. Because for a thought to happen in the first place there are so many different things that must occur in your brain to give that thought precedence over all the other thousands of other ones that are battling for prominence and attention.

But that doesn’t mean that every thought should dictate your actions.

You don’t even have to act on any thought. Instead, if you are overthinking and want to get yourself out of that funk then there are other things you can do instead.

That’s where a powerful distraction can come into play.

Here are a few you can do that will give you plenty else to think about instead of that one thought that’s dominating between your ears:

1. Do something else.

I know that sounds pretty basic but much of the time it works. Because often when we get dominated by one thought we can lose our attention in what we were doing in the first place and the thought takes over from us. That’s when accidents can happen and we know straight away our attention had drifted before they occurred.

But before that happens we need to be able to freshen things up and find something of interest that will offer a new or curious sensation of thoughts to our brains.

That need only be something simple that we like to do but once we do it we won’t be controlled by the initial thought that was dragging us back in the first place.

2. Spend time with a good friend.

As this will allow you to give them your full attention. And if the friend is a good enough one they`ll know you are properly present with them or not.

To help yourself in becoming distracted by them make sure to ask them about all their news and updates in life. They`ll be delighted to tell you what’s happening and from there you’ll probably go through a range of emotions about what they tell you. But the great thing is those emotions are related to their lives and not yours so once you leave them you can choose to switch off from their stuff and get focused on something else again.

And in the meantime, you`ve given yourself a break from what was on your mind in the first place.

3. Go to the cinema and spend a couple of hours watching a movie.

Because if something is dominating your thoughts and you want to think about something else the extreme sound of the movie house, the darkened room, and the overpowering action on the big screen will create an atmosphere that’s almost impossible to ignore.

In doing so you`ll be able to allow yourself to be plunged into a world of imagination for a couple of hours and whatever was on your mind will have to wait for another time.

4. By being in a ‘live’ concert you’re surrounded by so many people and you’ll be in the middle of an experience.

And hearing the loud music will put words in your mouth that many around you are probably stimulations in your brain that you`ll be forced to look around yourself and wonder about lots of different things.

5. And if that doesn’t distract you enough or the music isn’t your thing then attend a sporting occasion because it’s a social experience and it’s there you’ll meet new people too.

Because although it may not be as loud as the ‘live’ music the action on the field can pull you to its battle and re-awaken that ancient primitive brain of yours.

But similar to one thought having the opportunity to rear its head beyond all the other thoughts if you can’t stop yourself thinking then perhaps the thought that’s seeking so much prominence needs to be addressed so it doesn’t cause you longer-term stress.

When that happens and all the above strategies fail then you may have a thought that is paining you. When this happens you can:

  • Face your thoughts but do so in a quiet area when you are alone,
  • Write down your thoughts on a piece of paper in both a ‘Pros’ and ‘Cons’ column of your page,

or

  • Speak to someone you trust about what you’re thinking.
  • Because if you don’t seek another’s opinion at this stage that thought can fester and be destructive to your overall growth.

And that’s not what a prominent thought should do.

Rather you have to be aware a prominent thought can be the conductor of orchestra in your life.

So be careful which thought you give the microphone to in your brain because it can take over the stage of your dreams.
