How Society Affects Your Behavior
Its true you can create your future but in the mean time society is shaping your present
From a top-down approach society always affects your behavior.
Because society dictates your position in its overall structure.
Think about it for a moment.
No matter what country you’re in, you have to abide by certain laws that the country has. Some countries have laws that are strictly adhered to and dictate the culture of the nation. Laws can be so old that they become embedded in peoples’ psyche.
Your parents and your grandparents and even their parents before them let this law dictate their behavior.
And most people fear breaking the law and not breaking it becomes a badge of honor. A person and their family become known as good people simply because they are always law-abiding citizens. And this helps others in society function in a peaceful way.
But if there’s a fear of doing something that law is based on there may be a limitation in one’s mind too.
I`m not for one minute saying people should desire to go out and break the law of a land or that they should become tempted by wanting to do it. But many people limit their thinking because of the constrictions that are passed on to them by the dictation of the law.
If you don’t have a law you’ll start to create the ‘what ifs’ of what could happen in your mind if you were to go further and do something that you don’t normally do.
And this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Being able to imagine what it’s like to do bad things exercises your vision for what is possible. Of course, it’s not good to dabble in negative thoughts or do bad things but allowing your mind to wander presents opportunities for you to see how your life could alter if you thought differently.
Because that’s the problem that societal norms give to us.
They limit our thinking.
But laws are only one part of what societal norms are but traditions also play a big part.
Okay, for sure you can say that laws build traditions but not always. Sometimes traditional ways of doing things come from religious beliefs. As many countries have a predominant religion it can usually define the communal thinking that occurs. Generations can be influenced by the underlying religious ideal and in general, this can be a great thing.
However, it can also limit your thinking because in a similar way to the limitations that laws of the land can provide, accepting everything that a religion dictates can limit your imagination to think outside the box.
And then there are governments.
Because political ideologies can shape how society is put together.
Many people vote for the same political parties as their parents and their parents before them voted for those political parties. They influenced their grandparents and their parents too and this helped sculpt their thinking also. In many ways, we’re conditioned to accept what is the best political stance from how our parents think. Although at times certain policies and law changes may tweak a person’s emotions and how they may decide to vote, in the main many will still vote for the party they know best.
And so all of that type of restrictive thinking is imposed on us by the past or existing structures of society.
Of course, much of that structure is well-intentioned and there to help the majority as they live their daily lives. Because the majority of people do not want to adapt, change, or sometimes even grow. They want to clock in and out of job and will trade their time for enough money to simply get by.
But if you want to change and grow you need to firstly think beyond what you usually do and then take action to do something more than you’ve done before.
If you accept the advantages that society has imposed on you such as through the laws, religious beliefs, and traditions then there’s no doubt that you can live a happy and good life. But if you remove those structures and allow yourself to think beyond them you’ll begin to see possibilities for you and how you can change the way you do things in your life too.
When you start to think beyond the limitations that are there you think differently than the majority of people in your society.
And that’s when you’ll see opportunities.
Opportunities to grow mentally, improve physically, to meet new people, to understand things progressively, and to change your career or develop your new ideas into a new financial advantage. And it only takes one new person or thing that you’ll notice that can change your life forever that will make you go on the road of thinking better and this will impact on your future ideas too.
And from the customer’s point of view, that means they’ll see your new product or service as being different as well.
They’ll flick through pages in a paper, scroll through their phones online, or stroll past shops and notice very little. But when they notice something novel or different they’ll be curious to find out what it is and how it can benefit them in their lives. And if it’s unique then it will appeal to more people and in time make you more money.
So why let society dictate your behavior?
If you see past the structures that it imposes for the majority then you can begin to build a life that’s beyond your current thinking. And anyway, so long as you’re a good person you’ll fit in with those around you just fine.
But, if you alter your thinking outside of what you already know you’ll find things that have been waiting for you all along.
