Respect the elderly.

I know that sounds very basic but it’s true. And it’s one of the most overlooked pieces of advice I’ve ever been told in life.

When I was young I was told to look out for older people in society. It was said they deserved respect because they`d been around longer than me and always would be. So they would have experienced more than me in life.

And with that, they`d have many years of wisdom built up in their bank of life.

So if I was talking as if I knew everything in reality I wouldn’t have. Because I wouldn’t know what happened leading up to a situation or before it ever happened at all.

Yet anyone older would have seen it and gone through it.

It’s similar to that old saying that stated:

‘They’ve bought the tee-shirt!’

Heck, they may as well have designed it too.

Because that’s how far elderly people’s experience goes. And I for one can’t claim to have lived that long. Nor can I claim to have that depth of wisdom they have.

By showing respect to the elderly you can employ a few basic tactics.

In doing so you`ll learn a lot about yourself. And from there you can try to avoid some mistakes they’ve also made.

1. So if you allow older people to have their say all you have to do is listen.

By listening you`re getting free education. And in doing so you’re getting a first-hand master class on life. Feelings and all.

With those feelings, they show their aging process and how it stressed them over their time.

From there you can avoid the same mistakes they’ve made if you listen intently to what they have to say.

2. By helping the elderly they’ll be very thankful and tell you why they needed that help.

Of course, this may seem like a complaint about something physically bothering them but if you take in what they’re saying you`ll begin to see a trend with other people of their age and notice what injuries are common in people of their vintage. From there you can begin to acknowledge why it’s best to look after your body as you age so you can avoid the same issues they`ve had when they got older.

3. If you look out for an older person when the winter comes you begin to think about how the weather can affect people.

And older people often have less ability to sustain adverse weather conditions than when they were younger. Because if high winds or rains come and branches of trees fall they`ll need someone to remove those obstructions from their way.

That’s where you can come in.

And from there they`ll be very thankful.

From there elderly people tend to feel as if the walls of unfamiliarity are broken down and they`ll delve into deeper secrets from their past. And if you can be there when a memory comes flooding back you`ll get a pearl of wisdom that`ll be beneficial to you for decades to come without you having to go through the trial and error of it all yourself.

4. When issues come up in the news that can split society’s political divide an elderly person’s take on things are priceless.

Because they`ve likely lived through something like that experience before and although you may think it’s monumental for your life for them it can be like water off a duck’s back. It’s a case of ‘been there, done that!’ and when that’s the case you`ll know how to get out the other side when others around you are struggling without guidance. And if you make that choice you`ll be as content as the elderly person who made the same decision some decades earlier.

5. Older people will have regrets and if you stick around them long enough you`ll discover what they are.

And although that’s unfortunate for them for you learning from their regrets can shield you from making the same mistakes in the future instead. Because the future will push you back and beat you down. When that happens you`ll have big decisions to make so you`ll want to have a sharp instinct to know which choice to take so you won’t have regrets in the future as well.

6. Those who are elderly realize they’ve more yesterdays than tomorrows and so live their life with their best intention possible.

And if you can learn from their routine and what’s their important daily rituals you`ll begin to save time in your life as well. Because time is something we all get but we never know of much of it we receive. And when it’s gone you never get it back.

So if you can discover what is the best way to spend it you`ll be able to be as efficient in life as you can.

That way you`ll be able to get the most from it straight away and feel the buzz of being young and free.
