The Healing Power of Cold Water

Your nervous system loves cold water and this triggers healing even though you may hate the thought of it on your skin early in the morning

Daily cold showers will improve your overall performance.

And they won’t just make you wet!

Because your immune system is improved by taking a cold shower. According to one study, those that take consistent morning showers are 29% less likely to be absent from school or work. The study had over 3,000 people and based its outcomes on those who took 30–90 seconds showers in the morning.

It is also beneficial for your body’s lymphatic system. This system cleans out bacteria and microbes from our body’s cells. As the lymph system requires that your muscles are contracted to pump fluid through your vessels stagnation can occur if the movement does not exist.

That’s where pain and toxicity build up in the body.

By showering under cold water the nervous system is alerted and the muscles contract. Then in response, the lymph system pumps waste from your body.

The shower also alerts the white blood cells in the body. White blood cells protect the body from infection.

Of course though before the muscles contract, they need power behind them. That’s how the cardiovascular system kicks into place. Because cold showers improve your cardiovascular system which allows the blood flow to rush to your vital organs.

And when blood is flowing throughout your body your circulation is improving.

Your body has to work harder to improve the efficiency of the process. When the body is under stress or obstructed by injury or illness having the ability for the cold shower to trigger a rush of blood can help the obstruction of injury to revive a jolt of energy which can help speed up energy.

Inflammation is reduced because the blood can now run freely. Cold temperatures constrict the blood vessels, and so lowering swelling and lessening pain.

Because many people are living more sedentary lifestyles and a quick cold shower can bolster the unnatural lack of movements that people have after prolonged periods of sitting.

Even your skin can be improved by taking cold showers. Those that have skin ailments have been found to benefit from regular showers and it can also give your skin a healthy glow. By constricting and tightening the skin is said to give it a healthier glow.

Then there are your hair cuticles.

Cold water strengthens your hair cuticles and avoids the drying out of hair that hot water gives it.

And then there are the benefits to your feelings of wellbeing and happiness.

Because studies on depression have shown that cold showers can complement the effects of prescription medication as they elicit a dopamine effect on the brain.

And when you improve the brain’s performance you change your body’s response to it.

That’s why you may lose weight as a result of this new morning habit too. Because your body is forced to burn calories to fight the immediate cold that comes from it and it benefits the production of good brown fat. As brown fat eliminates white fat which can pile on around people’s waistline.

But without the temperature being lowered surely there is no other benefit to the cold shower?

Not so.

Because water itself is a healing element and this has been acknowledged for many million years.

Especially in the Chinese medical tradition.

Because along with wood, fire, earth, and metal, water represents humans’ relationship with nature.

And water is not on its own as it is associated with wintertime too. That’s a time for our thoughts to turn into more reflective silence and inner warmth.

Water is also associated with the health and wellness of your kidneys and your balder. But that’s not all. Because in Chinese medicine each person is associated with a different type, and the water type lends to the old saying of “still waters running deep”.

Those that are associated with water are known to be more philosophical and contemplative in life. And if you are a water type of person you may also suffer from fear.

Because fear is aligned with water in Chinese medicine.

That’s the sign when that type of person needs to slow down and use their energy differently. Rather than running here and there and going with the flow of life, water people need to take stock and stall their speed.

Similar to how you see water flowing in a river where it may be gushing from a waterfall and then needing to slow downstream, people who are associated with water find it difficult to cease the flow when they are feeling good about things.

So when you think about the ability of a morning shower which is made up of water, coldness, and energy it’s clear that there are more facets to its purpose than what it seems on the surface.

And it’s all of those variables that add up to provide a powerful wake-up call to perform at your best once you dry off and look at yourself in the mirror.
