‘I think it’s a yes’

said Tom Brady when asked recently in Tampa Bay Buccaneers by his teammate Ron Gronkowski about whether or not he can continue to play in the NFL when he reaches his half-century milestone.

His words sounded like those of the great creative mathematician and paramount Scientist René Descartes who stated:

“I think therefore I am”

But, realistically, how could Brady think this way?

After all, no one else has completed the feat he’s talking about. He must be mad, crazy even.

Does he not see that football is becoming a dangerous sport to be involved in?

What about all the older players that are having issues with their brains as they age?

Or is he just arrogant to think he’s different than most players that have passed through the NFL over the years and have not made it past their late forties to play in several or any Super Bowl?

The answers to all these questions are not known.

Each question in itself would raise quite a debate not only about Brady himself but about the nature of football in the present day and the ability of how one human can venture into an unknown avenue of higher performance than most perceive cannot be achieved.

So let’s start by examining the evidence to see if he can reach the BIG 50, otherwise, we won’t know if he will for another few years.

In the previous seven years prior to Tom playing for Tampa Bay Brady has suffered a pedal ankle strain, a lacerated hand, an elbow strain, and a grade 3 knee tear. This is a minimal injury history and with the rich quality of the injury prevention methods and expert staff that the likes of NFL quarterbacks now have at their service, it’s quite possible he’ll remain uninjured if he doesn’t receive many tackles in the years ahead.

With that all said, it’s fair to say Brady understands his body.

After all, he realizes it’s the vehicle that carries him on the field of play.

By playing at the top level of professional sport you need to know more about the human physique than when you were a younger player. You must know that even if an athlete is physically fit they may not be a healthy person. Because if they are not healthy then their longevity as an athlete will be compromised.

And that means the sustainability of your team’s success is less likely to continue.

So getting to know the basics of the human body is very important. One vital thing to know as an aging player is that the mind, brain, and body are all linked. By understanding the body’s main functionality you are allowing yourself to figure out how every part of the body is interlinked.

And, how is this so?

  • In the human body, the nervous system sends signals to various parts of the body and controls movements,
  • The peripheral nervous system has the nerves and the ganglia,
  • The Central Nervous System connects the limbs and organs of the body,
  • The Autonomic Nervous System is involuntary and looks after the cardiac & smooth muscles and glands,
  • The circulatory system deals with the heart pumping blood from the right chambers into the lungs and then back towards the left chambers again,
  • The Immune System protects the body from foreign entities, it has a dual system of protection,
  • The respiratory system allows for the contraction and expansion of the lungs,
  • Then there is the digestive system,
  • Here energy required by the body is provided by the food we consume,

· The Endocrine System uses glands in the body that secrete hormones into the circulatory system and this carries to specific organs,

  • The Urinary System consists of the kidneys, the bladder, prostate, penis, urethra, and ureters,

And finally

  • The reproductive system unifies the male sperm and female ovum.

Of course, this final system for Brady is very important. After all, if he and his wife are content with the three children they already have then it’s likely they’ll have fewer broken nights’ sleep and this can only benefit him as he journeys on into the hall of fame while still throwing a ball.

But it’s not only about understanding his body because what’s more important for Brady is to understand his mind.

For a man of his age to state that he thinks he can do something 6 years away from the present at such a high level of performance shows how strong he is feeling in the present moment. He is very confident about all other aspects of his life and not only the shell that protects his internal organs.

Given that he’s been playing at the highest level since the twin towers dust was still swarming around the streets of New York it’s clear that whatever way he treats his body he does so with longevity, power, and a stable core of maintaining peak physique in mind.

The evidence suggests that so long as Brady wants to play, the coaches, management, and organization want him there, and he continues to think in the same way then it’s quite possible that he can play until 50 years of age in the NFL.

Of course, though, Brady’s thinking can’t change because if it does the team around him will and it won’t be long before a tackle from outside could find him unprotected and his future years of throwing misdirected.

But if he continues doing what he’s doing and knowing what he believes then his yardage may go well beyond his half-century and into the next ballpark of the future.

And he’ll prove to be a more creative mathematician than Descartes as he’ll go beyond the age that no top-class footballer will have gone before!
